PLAXIS 2D to 3D Converter tool

The 2D to 3D converter tool is now elevated into a full feature, from being a Tech preview before. Various issues have been addressed, conversion of tunnel reinforcements is now possible, and a connection to PLAXIS 3D is established automatically, if possible.
 


 

Technology Preview: Improved import from SOILVISION SVSLOPE 2D

Added functionality to import load boundary conditions and structural objects and their material properties from SOILVISION 2D models (SVSLOPE).

Technology Preview: Exporting to ParaView

Some bugfixes and stability improvements have been implemented.

New features

Calculation Manager

A new Calculation Manager tool has been added, allowing the calculation of a queue of projects for PLAXIS 2D and PLAXIS 3D. It also offers facilities to inspect selected models before and after calculation.

PLAXIS Output Viewer
 


 

PLAXIS 2D and 3D CONNECT Edition Output Viewers are now available free to use. The PLAXIS Output Viewer is a standalone application intended for viewing and inspecting the results of a fully calculated PLAXIS model, enabling the communication of results to stakeholders without a PLAXIS license. It is delivered with PLAXIS 2D, but also available as a separate download.

ProjectWise integration

ProjectWise integration is now elevated into a full feature, from being a Technology Preview before. Various issues have been addressed, and it is now possible to leave a project checked out when closing the PLAXIS program.

Command line autocomplete

Command line autocomplete is now elevated into a full feature, from being a Technology Preview before. Various issues have been addressed, the performance has been improved, and command line autocomplete is now enabled by default.

Python environment updates

Separation of the deliverable Python environment: one that can be used for user created Python scripts and the editor, and one trimmed down environment intended for all PLAXIS extensions written in Python, e.g. the 2D to 3D converter and the structural Coupling tool.

Users may also choose their own Python installation over the delivered Python environment to further customize their automated workflows.

New features

2D Classic converter tool

A tool has been added for converting PLAXIS 2D 2010/2D 2011/2D 2012 and PLAXIS 2D Classic projects (*.P2D) into logfiles that can be executed in PLAXIS 2D CONNECT Edition. This means that older PLAXIS files with the *.P2D can directly be converted to PLAXIS 2D CONNECT Edition V20 Update 2 right from the Input program. Reduced file size

The result files of intermediate steps in a calculation phase are now stored as single-precision floating-point numbers, instead of double-precision floating-point numbers. This reduces the file size of especially dynamic projects greatly.

New command: clearmaterial

A clearmaterial command has been added for removing the material assigned to a feature.

When using the Right Mouse Button (RMB) on any object with a material assigned to it, you can now choose to clear the material. This is also available in the Tunnel Designer.

Easier access to ProjectWise and Cloud services

New buttons are added to the main toolbar to make it easier using Bentley's ProjectWise and Cloud Services to set up an Associated Project. This information is now also available via the Project properties in the new tab Cloud services

New location for the PLAXIS-Python Distribution

With the release of PLAXIS CE V20.02.00, the PLAXIS Python Distribution is placed in a dedicated versioned location within the ProgramData folder. By default, this is:

C:\ProgramData\Bentley\Geotechnical\PLAXIS Python Distribution v1.0.0

This allows for both PLAXIS 2D and PLAXIS 3D applications to access this shared distribution for all the functionality that require using Python Scripting facilities, keeping all the modules up to date and fully compatible with PLAXIS.

Technology Preview: Exporting to ParaView

A tool has been added for exporting the Finite Element Model and the calculation results to ParaView.

New features

Improved User Interface

The user interface for the PLAXIS applications has been updated with new Bentley icons and images. A splash screen is now being shown at startup of the Input and Output applications.

Compressed storage of result files

In the phase settings now it is possible to enable compression for result files. Compressed files are smaller in size but there is a small performance overhead when opening them in Output.

Improved the command for modifying soil layer levels

It is now possible to change several soil layer levels of a borehole at once, providing better performance for large models.

Quick start window

The "Quick select" window has been redesigned to show the latest news and the state of licences too. It also has a new look and feel and is renamed to "Quick start".

Bentley Cloud Services

Bentley Cloud Services option in the File menu allows the association of a Connected Bentley project to a PLAXIS project.

PLAXIS UDSM

The PLAXIS installation now comes with all PLAXIS User Defined Soil Models (UDSM), including these newly developed constitutive (soil) models:

Masonry;

OC-Clay;

Hoek and Brown with softening (HBS).

New location for the PLAXIS-Python Distribution

With the release of PLAXIS CE V20.01.00, the PLAXIS Python Distribution is placed in a dedicated location within the ProgramData folder. By default, this is:

Importing SoilVision Models - Technology Preview

SVSlope 2D model geometry and soil material placeholders can be imported from the File menu.

Westergaard Added Mass - Technology Preview

Westergaard Added Mass feature has been added, which can be used to model the effects of any liquid against a structure under dynamic loading conditions (earthquakes). E.g. the inertial effects, or additional hydrostatic pressure of a mass of water or liquid against a dam or wall.

ProjectWise integration - Technology Preview

Now it is possible to open a project from a ProjectWise data source or add a local project to it.

PLAXIS 2D to 3D converter - Technology Preview

2D to 3D converter has been added in PLAXIS 2D Input's Expert menu. Now you can easily bring your PLAXIS 2D model into PLAXIS 3D.

Command line autocomplete - Technology Preview

The Command-line autocomplete feature makes using the command line easier by automatically suggesting commands and object names. It can be enabled and disabled from the Options menu.

Subscription Entitlement Service (SES) Licensing

The new PLAXIS releases use the same licensing system as the rest of the applications in your Bentley Playbook. SES Licensing provides a unique ID throughout all Bentley applications, removing the need for dongle keys and manual license version management. Additionally, access personal learning material, paths and history, timely product related news, automatic product updates, and notifications.

Scripting Reference manual as a Jupyter notebook

Easily learn Python-based remote scripting in PLAXIS with the new Scripting Reference manual. Sample scripts for each of the commands in PLAXIS 2D and 3D are offered in a Jupyter notebook. These samples can be run live in the software to see and understand what happens. You can also edit and rerun the samples and see the effect of your changes, offering a great way of learning-by-doing.
 

Others

 

To improve the support for scripting, material properties can now be set to an invalid state without directly getting an error message. The calculation still needs a valid dataset;

A new validate command for materials was added which checks every property at once;

PLAXIS Soiltest now supports command line and remote scripting;

the checks in the checkgeometry command have been extended. In addition, it is now also possible to execute this command from the calculation modes;

added command for checking the calculation conditions. These conditions are now also checked when running the calculate command;
